In addition to AmMap, a useful plugin to generate maps combined with KMZ and KML files is the "Plugin Googlemaps" in the JED. This plug-in produces the well-known maps with the Google Map API. Below is an example of a map that contains a route that was recorded with a Garmin handheld GPS.
Step 1: To generate a KML file, we use Mapsource of Garmin, the producer of GPS equipment.
Step 2: Once we have downloaded a track from our GPS device, we normally delete all way points and save only the track information to avoid too much information on the map.
Step 3: In Mapsource, we view the file in Google Earth.
Step 4: In Google Earth, we save the track as a KML file to our computer.
Step 5: We upload the KML file to the server and make a link to the KML file in the article tag of the plugin.
You can also place placemarks directly in Google Earth and save the file as a KMZ file to the server.
